Jonas Armstrong.net - Biography

Jonas Armstrong was born in Mount Carmel Hospital, Dublin, Ireland on  1st January 1981, exactly one minute after midnight on New Years Day. He was reported to be the first baby born that year His parents moved to St Annes, Lancashire, when Jonas was six years old. He is the eldest of three children and has two siblings - a brother and sister, both younger. Both are rumoured to be planning on following in their big brothers footsteps. Jonas claims to be a typical Capricorn and he jokes that his friends have nicknamed him 'monas' on account of his fondness for complaining. Jonas is 6ft tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

Jonas attended Arnold School in Blackpool, and was a member of the highly acclaimed drama group In Yer Space, appearing in various plays including Not About Heroes and A View From The Bridge, at festivals around the UK including the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2000 Jonas won a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

The special skills listed on his RADA profile include stage combat, period dance, flamenco, accents, guitar and tennis. Other experience includes TAPS short films, Edinburgh Fringe and Buxton Fringe plus the Isle of Man Festival and the National Student Drama Festival. His interests include football [he supports Man Utd], writing, playing guitar, sketching and tennis.

Jonas had a successful stage career after leaving RADA and appeared in several plays including playing Derek Meadle in Quartermaines Terms. It was described by one critic as a cross between Teachers and Please Sir. He also appeared in The Skin of our Teeth and Rutherford & Son.

In 2004 Jonas is reported to have had a minor role in the mini series Islands at War but we've not been able to find any information relating to this. He then went on to star as Anthony Millington in Channel 4's Teachers. Jonas only appears in season 4 but he made quite an impact. His co-star Tamsin Malleson [Penny] is the wife of Jonas' current Robin Hood co-star Keith Allen.

In 2005 Jonas appeared in the gritty police drama Ghost Squad opposite Helen Fielding and Elaine Cassidy. The show only ran for one season and has been shown in Australia. The DVD is only available to purchase in Australia and France.  Jonas played Pete Maitland.

Jonas learned that he had won the part of Robin Hood while filming Losing Gemma in India - 2006.  Losing Gemma aired in December of 2006, exactly a week before the penultimate episode of Robin Hood Series 1.

October 7th 2006 and the newest adaptation of Robin Hood airs on BBC1 with Jonas playing the iconic role of Sherwood outlaw Robin Hood.

With his thoroughly modern hoodie and his gang - as opposed to merry men - and minus a Friar Tuck, Jonas leapt on to our screens and brought us the most powerful, most sensitive, most fun version of Robin Hood ever!

Series 2 aired in October of 2007 and Series 3 is due to air in January 2009. Jonas has confirmed that he will hang up his hoodie after S3.

He has ensured his place in history as the Robin Hood of this generation and he will be a tough act to follow for the next RH.

In December of 2007 Jonas travelled to Edinburgh to film Clive Barkers Books of Blood. He will play Simon McNeal and co-stars with Sophie Ward and pinhead himself - Doug Bradley. No release date has been given yet but it is expected to be in cinemas in 2009.  Clive Barker has been quoted as saying that Jonas is "Fearless" and "Superb".

Despite an early start on The Glasshouse in mid 2009 the project was cancelled. We do however have some lovely publicity shots which can be found in the Gallery.

As of September 2009 It has been confirmed that Jonas will star as Anthony Cade in a new Miss Marple mystery "The Secret of Chimneys." alongside Charlotte Salt, Ruth Jones & Mathew Horne. No publicity shots as yet.
