Robin Hood Series 1 - Episode 1 aired 7th October 2006
The legend of Robin Hood

Robin is famous for his gallantry, robbing the rich to feed the poor and fighting against injustice and tyranny. Anyone who knows of Robin will also be familar with the stories of his outlaw band. The names of Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian, Allan a Dale, Will Scarlett, Much the miller and the evil Sheriff of Nottingham are as much a part of the legend as Robin himself.

The stories of Robin portray him as a fearless outlaw leading his band of merry men [and women] against the tyranny of Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Guy of Gisborne. A brilliant archer, Robin lived a life of adventure - poaching the Kings deer from the outlaws retreat in Sherwood Forest.

Stories about the adventures of Robin have been told and re-told for over six hundred years. In Robins time few people could read or write and consequently little was written down about the exploits of our hero. Instead people learnt about Robin and his band through the ballad and song of wandering minstrels who weaved a patchwork of fact and fiction into the contemporary culture of the time.

The gang is horrified when Robin saves an arsonist from burning Locksley Church and brings him back to the forest, as Dominic Minghella's action-packed version of the famous English legend continues. When they discover that arsonist Harold was a Crusader and his behaviour is a symptom of Crusader's Sickness, Robin assigns the task of nurse to the reluctant Much.

Meanwhile, the gang stumbles upon a mysterious Saracen carriage in the forest and uncovers a sinister rusty mask. They fear it is a sign of witchcraft at play in the forest and Robin's reasoning falls on deaf ears.

Little do they all know that the carriage belongs to Saladin's cousin, Prince Malik, who has arrived in Nottingham to broker a peace deal with Prince John. Pampered, entertained and confined for his “own protection”, Malik has been a guest at the Castle for two weeks and is anxious either to start peace talks or find his lost carriage and get to London. He has no idea that, in reality, the Sheriff is demanding a ransom for him from Saladin.

Robin pounces on Malik when he and Gisborne enter the forest to retrieve the carriage. Robin gets his ear bashed by the Prince, who is desperate to return to his peace deal, and finally lets him go, satisfied that he has now proved to his men that there is no witchcraft at work in the forest. Much also appears to have helped Harold, so all seems to be well again.

However, Marian's latest report gives Robin an idea. If the Sheriff has received a ransom for the Prince, then there's a fair bit of money on its way. Waiting for ransom money to turn up, the gang encounters a mysterious group of women, guarding what appears to be the ransom chest. But on closer inspection, a terrified Djaq identifies the group as a crack team of ruthless assassins.

Little John tries to save his son but it is a futile gesture and, within seconds, he, too, is carted off to the castle dungeons.

The Sheriff sets up a day of public punishments for which Little John will be the star attraction. Without the tags, Little John cannot be identified as one of Robin's gang and is sent to the dungeons where he meets his son and bowmaker Luke. But time has moved on for the Littles and it's clear that Luke has been looking out for Alice and Little Little John. Then fate plays its hand and Alice is thrown in the dungeons – estranged husband and wife are temporarily reunited.

Will and Allan disguise themselves as guards to infiltrate the castle. Meanwhile, Much and Djaq are left behind to contemplate life without Robin, who visits Marian in her guest rooms to see if he can track down John.

Episode 12 - Return of the King - 23rd December 2006 UK Air Date

The glorious news spreads that King Richard is returning to England, as Dominic Minghella's action-packed version of the famous English legend continues. For most, the news hails a return to the good old days, but for Marian, it means her marriage to Guy of Gisborne is brought one step closer.

Robin is desperate to find evidence that will convict Gisborne of his crimes and visits Thornton at Locksley Manor to investigate Gisborne's whereabouts during the Holy War. The trail leads him to Physician Pitts, who attended Gisborne during his sickness some months ago.

Gisborne, meanwhile, wastes no time in bringing his marriage to Marian forward and, to prove he can provide for her, shows off his stately wealth. But now armed with insider's knowledge of the Manor, his "fiancée" sets out on her last mission as the Nightwatchman: to steal Gisborne's money and distribute it amongst the villagers.

Once Robin has secured Pitts's confession and promise of help, he returns to Knighton to break the good news to Marian. But she has already broken into Locksley Manor and, suddenly and terrifyingly, found herself cornered. Robin guesses where she is and arrives just in time to stop Gisborne apprehending her but, as they break out, Gisborne attacks the disguised Marian.

Robin carries his beloved, who is suffering stab wounds, to a cave in the forest, where Djaq does her best to operate but is unsure whether she can save her. Fearing the worst, Robin and Marian are able to share their feelings for one another at last.

Elsewhere, loaded with Locksley money, Will and Allan set out on the Great North Road. With the King back, Robin will be established as Lord and Much as a landowner, but all Will and Allan have to look forward to is a return to their former lacklustre existence, so they head off – unaware of the unfolding crisis behind them.

Back in the forest, Robin has brought Pitts to see Marian but the physician declares that there is nothing he can do but give her hemlock to ease her pain. But Pitts has also left a trail for the Sheriff and his men, which will lead them to Robin. As the hero tries to figure out how to get out of this latest scrape, terrible news reaches him: Marian is dead.

Episode 13 - Clue No! - Saturday 30th December 2006 UK Air Date

Robin's world has fallen apart, in the concluding episode of the high-octane drama. Unable to come to terms with losing Marian, he refuses to help Edward confront the King and abandons Much and the gang. But all is not as it seems and the discovery of a terrible secret spurs him back into action.

Cornered by the Sheriff, it seems that Robin and his gang are doomed. With nothing left to lose, the enraged and grieving outlaw leads his gang into what could be their final battle – and their power is devastating.

The Sheriff, who knows nothing about Marian's death, realises that something must be amiss if Robin is murdering his guards. And, with Will and Allan returning to help, the tide begins to turn.

Later, Robin returns to the cave to mourn Marian – and she awakens. The hemlock, Djaq explains, had an anaesthetic effect and she did not die after all. Robin is delighted, but then remembers he no longer has the evidence to convict Gisborne. He must take Marian home and hope that the King will restore the kingdom to its former glory.

Marian returns to her father at Knighton, where Edward and lords loyal to the King are preparing to rise up against the Sheriff. As Marian dresses for her wedding, father and daughter separate in preparation for two very different days.

Robin is about to take his leave, too. Depressed about Marian's impending marriage, he fights with Much and breaks away from the gang: there's no point in being Robin Hood any more. As he heads off, Much follows him but, on the way, encounters King Richard's procession and realises something strange is going on.

In the Great Hall, the Sheriff welcomes King Richard, only to receive a surprise of his own. The King orders his immediate arrest for treason and crimes against the state.

Meanwhile, Marian arrives at the church, prepared once and for all to become Lady Gisborne. And then everything changes. Much runs into the church, clanging the bell. It is not the real King – it has all been a trap!
